Awards Panelist News

Toronto – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is proud to share that Hon. Hugh L. Fraser (Ret.), FCIArb, O.C., is this year’s recipient of the Luminary Award, presented by the University of the West Indies (UWI) as part of the UWI Toronto Benefit Awards. The award was presented during a ceremony on April 20.

The Luminary Award recognizes individuals of Caribbean heritage who have made significant outstanding contributions on an international scale in their respective fields or people who have brought to prominence issues that affect the Caribbean (West Indian) region. For the past 14 years, the UWI Toronto Benefit Awards have supported the UWI’s scholarship fund for outstanding students in the Caribbean, many of whom lack funds and the majority of whom are in dire financial need.

Justice Fraser is known within the Canadian and international legal communities for his decades of service on the Ontario Court of Justice and for his leadership within the international sports law space. He has served on many international sports ADR panels, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and has made an indelible impact on the evolution of the industry. We congratulate him on this outstanding award.

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

Justice Fraser joined JAMS after an accomplished career as a justice of the Ontario Court of Justice (Ottawa). During his 25-year tenure on the bench, he conducted thousands of trials and directly mediated countless settlements in cases involving complex business/commercial, professional liability, torts, family, criminal and personal injury matters. He has also served on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, handling, large, highly complex disputes across a wide variety of jurisdictions and arbitral rules.

An Olympian and recognized international authority in sports law, Justice Fraser has served as an arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for almost three decades. He was appointed to CAS’ first ad hoc court at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 and has served as either sole arbitrator or part of a panel in dozens of sports-related disputes. Beyond his work on CAS, Justice Fraser is a member of several sports-related ADR panels in North America and Europe.
