Hon. Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix (Ret.) Joins JAMS in New York

Former New York City corporation counsel and state Supreme Court associate justice joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator.

New Panelist Announcement

New York – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Hinds-Radix joins after a distinguished career as New York City’s 81st corporation counsel and a jurist in New York state courts, including, most recently, her service from 2012 to 2022 as an associate justice of the Appellate Division, Supreme Court of the State of New York.

Judge Hinds-Radix was the first Caribbean-born person and woman of color and second woman overall to serve as corporation counsel of the New York City Law Department. As the city’s chief legal officer, she led the department primarily responsible for providing legal representation to the city, its mayor and other elected officials, as well as its myriad agencies in civil litigations. Furthermore, in 2020, during her tenure as an associate justice, she was designated a member of the New York State Constitutional Bench. She also served as the administrative judge for civil matters for the Second Judicial District and a judge in New York City’s civil and criminal courts.

Based in the New York Resolution Center, Judge Hinds-Radix will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator, handling business/commercial, civil rights, employment and labor, family law, personal injury, professional liability and real property cases. She is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“Throughout her career, Judge Hinds-Radix has been a trailblazer in the law and a fierce proponent of greater access to justice within New York state. Her extensive and diverse experience will be an asset in working with parties across areas of the law, and we are so pleased to welcome her to our panel.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Judge Hinds-Radix began her legal career at District Council 37, one of the city’s largest public employee unions. Her roles within the union included those of chief counsel for the Immigration Program, a program that she founded; supervising attorney for the Landlord and Tenant Division; and senior attorney in the consumer litigation and bankruptcy Division. She has also received multiple awards and honors, including, most recently, being recognized with the Public Servant of the Year Award by the Metropolitan Black Bar Association and the Founders Award by the Caribbean-American Lawyers Association.

“It was an honor to serve as both New York City’s corporation counsel and an associate justice in New York state’s Supreme Court, and I plan to use these experiences to inform my work in helping guide parties toward successful and fulfilling resolutions as a JAMS neutral,” said Judge Hinds-Radix.

Judge Hinds-Radix earned her B.S. from the University of Massachusetts, M.A. from Long Island University and J.D. from Howard University School of Law.
