Hon. Luis A. Lavin (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Los Angeles

Former appellate justice joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and special master/referee

New Panelist Announcement

Los Angeles – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Luis A. Lavin (Ret.) has joined its panel. Justice Lavin joins JAMS after a distinguished 22-year judicial career, having most recently served for nine years on the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District.

Justice Lavin was appointed as a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2001 and served in that role for 13 years. As a Superior Court judge, he presided over more than 100 bench and jury trials. For three years, he was assigned to a specialized trial department focused on complex matters, such as CEQA and Coastal Act challenges, land use disputes and public employment issues. In 2015, he was elevated to the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District. During his tenure there, he authored more than 750 opinions on a wide range of issues. He also sat by appointment on the California Supreme Court on several occasions.

Based in the Los Angeles Resolution Center, Justice Lavin will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and special master/referee, handling administrative law, appellate, business and commercial, class action and mass tort, employment law, entertainment, estate/probate/trusts, insurance, professional liability and real property matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“Justice Lavin’s legal experience spans private practice, the public sector and the California courts. He has devoted many years to teaching and investing in the next generation of legal professionals and is known for his strong leadership, aptitude for navigating complex cases and commitment to excellence. We are proud to have him join our panel.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Prior to his judicial service, Justice Lavin held significant roles in public service and worked in private practice for many years. His work included serving as the director of enforcement and general counsel for the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, a senior trial attorney with the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice and an assistant attorney general in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School, Southwestern Law School and USC School of Law, and has served as an instructor of judicial education for the California Center for Judicial Education and Research and the Los Angeles Superior Court.

"As an appellate justice and trial judge handling complex, high-profile cases for 22 years, I gained valuable insight into how civil disputes unfold. I look forward to bringing that knowledge and my passion for fair, equitable solutions to JAMS,” said Justice Lavin.

Justice Lavin earned his B.S. from Cornell University and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
