Hon. Joan A. Madden (Ret.) Joins JAMS in New York

Former New York County Supreme Court justice joins JAMS as arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator

New Panelist Announcement

New York – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of Hon. Joan A. Madden (Ret.). Justice Madden joins JAMS with 29 years of experience on the bench, having served New York State with distinction. She was first elected to the New York County Civil Court in 1992 and was thereafter elected twice to the New York State Supreme Court, where she served a total of 23 years.

During her years on the bench, Justice Madden presided over a large variety of cases. In her most recent four years of service, she was assigned to a Medical Malpractice Part. During her previous assignment to an Individual Assignment Part, matters she handled included consolidated actions involving complex asbestos litigation, receiverships, contracts, employment discrimination, professional malpractice, labor law, torts, residential and commercial landlord-tenant disputes, issues related to arbitration and preliminary injunctions, Article 78 proceedings, land use and environmental law.

Based in the New York Resolution Center, Justice Madden will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator, handling business and commercial, personal injury and torts, class action and mass torts, health care, professional liability, employment, product liability and estates/trusts/guardianship disputes. She is available to conduct sessions in person (adhering to reopening guidelines), as well as virtually for attorneys and their clients across the country.

Justice Madden is known for her deep knowledge of the law and has demonstrated her ability to resolve even the most complex matters with professionalism and fairness. We are looking forward to having Justice Madden on the panel as a JAMS neutral.

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

Before coming to the bench, Justice Madden worked as a trial and supervising attorney in the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society for 18 years, where she represented clients and supervised attorneys.

Throughout my career, I’ve found that preparation, patience and the ability to listen and understand the parties are key to resolving disputes. This is an exciting next chapter for me, and I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to the JAMS panel.

- Hon. Joan A. Madden (Ret.)

Justice Madden received her B.A. from Thomas More College (Fordham University) and her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law.
