Hon. Philip S. Gutierrez (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Los Angeles

Former federal and state judge joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and special master/referee

New Panelist Announcement

Los Angeles – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Philip S. Gutierrez (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Gutierrez joins JAMS with over 35 years of experience as a trial lawyer and state and federal judge.

Judge Gutierrez served as a United States district judge for the Central District of California from 2007 to 2024, including chief judge from 2020 to 2024. While on the bench, he was a founding member of the United States District Court’s Patent Pilot Program, which was developed to enhance expertise and efficiency in handling patent cases by assigning them to judges with specialized knowledge of and interest in patent law. During his tenure, he presided over and settled a wide range of complex civil cases.

Based in the Los Angeles Resolution Center, Judge Gutierrez will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and special master/referee, handling class action and mass torts, civil rights, health care, intellectual property, entertainment and sports, and environmental matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“For decades, Judge Gutierrez has maintained a reputation in the Southern California legal community and beyond as a leader and jurist deeply committed to justice and problem-solving in complex cases that span a wide range of practice areas. We are proud to welcome him to our JAMS panel and believe his experience and perspective will be tremendous assets.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Judge Gutierrez spent the first decade of his career as a trial lawyer, concentrating on complex business litigation, professional malpractice liability and insurance coverage issues. He was appointed to the Whittier Municipal Court in 1997, and after the unification of the Los Angeles court system in 2000, he served as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge until 2007. In addition to his judicial experience, he has actively participated in various judicial committees and enjoyed several teaching assignments.

“I enjoyed handling a wide range of complex matters on the federal bench and working with the court to make dispute resolution more efficient. I look forward to bringing those skills to my ADR practice at JAMS,” said Judge Gutierrez.

Judge Gutierrez earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law.
