Hon. Jeffrey K. Oing (Ret.) Joins JAMS in New York

Former New York State Supreme Court associate justice of the Appellate Division, First Department joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator

New Panelist Announcement

New York – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Jeffrey K. Oing (Ret.) has joined its panel. Justice Oing joins JAMS after serving on the bench in New York for 20 years, having most recently served as an associate justice on the Appellate Division, First Department, Supreme Court of the State of New York.

In 2017, Justice Oing was appointed to the Appellate Division, First Department of the New York State Supreme Court, a court whose jurisdiction encompasses New York and Bronx counties and hears appeals from the Supreme Court (civil and criminal), Surrogate’s Court, Family Court and Court of Claims. He began his judicial career when he was elected to the New York County Civil Court in 2003. In 2009, he was appointed supervising judge of the New York County Civil Court and designated an acting Supreme Court judge. In 2010, he was elected to the Supreme Court, and after a five-month assignment to a General Trial Part, he was assigned to the Commercial Division. There, he presided over complex business and financial disputes, including a high-profile litigation involving three retail giants.

Based in the New York Resolution Center, Justice Oing will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator, handling business and commercial, civil rights, employment law, insurance, intellectual property, personal injury and tort, and real estate and real property matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“Justice Oing is an incredibly distinguished jurist and has extensive experience presiding over cases that run the gamut in terms of practice areas. His background includes handling pretrial rulings, bench and jury trials, judgments and settlement conferences—all of which will translate into invaluable insights as a JAMS panelist. He is known for his outstanding work ethic, active listening and ability to bring parties together. We look forward to seeing him thrive in this new role as a JAMS neutral.”

Justice Oing’s judicial tenure, combined with his extensive legal and administrative skills acquired during his time in private and public practice, equips him to deliver sophisticated ADR services in a wide range of roles and cases. Earlier in his career, Justice Oing served as deputy general counsel for the Office of the General Counsel, The Council of the City of New York, overseeing the City Council’s litigation and legal matters. Prior to that, he held various positions in the New York State Supreme Court. He served as court attorney in the New York State Supreme Court (New York County), law secretary to Hon. Marylin G. Diamond and, subsequently, law secretary to Hon. Walter B. Tolub, and principal appellate court attorney in the Appellate Division, First Department.

“As I reflect on my career so far, I’ve been very fortunate to practice law in a way that has not only encompassed tremendous diversity in subject matter, but has also provided the opportunity to work with parties and counsel from all walks of life. From that, I’ve learned how to lead with a people-first mindset and understand how consensus can be established when you listen carefully and foster cooperation. I look forward to this next chapter of my career with JAMS,” said Justice Oing.

Justice Oing earned his B.A. from Columbia University and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
