James T. Swenson, Retired Judge, Hennepin County District Court, Joins JAMS in Minneapolis

Retired judge and seasoned ADR professional joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and court-appointed neutral

New Panelist Announcement

Minneapolis – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that James T. Swenson, Retired Judge, Hennepin County District Court, has joined its panel. Judge Swenson joins JAMS with over 40 years of legal experience.

Judge Swenson was appointed to the Fourth Judicial District, Hennepin County, in 1995 and served in that role until 2016. While on the bench, he was chief judge, assistant chief judge and presiding judge of family court. He was instrumental in leading improvements within the Minnesota court system, including the state’s first uses of early neutral evaluation. Since his retirement from the bench in 2016, he has devoted his practice to the resolution of complex disputes.

Based in the Minneapolis Resolution Center, Judge Swenson will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, neutral evaluator and court-appointed neutral, handling banking and finance, business and commercial, construction, employment, entertainment and sports, family law, neutral analysis and real estate matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“We are honored to welcome Judge Swenson to our accomplished panel of neutrals at JAMS. His legacy of leadership, unparalleled experience in case management and a deep understanding of legal strategy will be assets to parties in Minnesota and beyond.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Prior to taking the bench, Judge Swenson practiced as a trial lawyer for nearly two decades. He tried cases in over 20 areas of the law, including construction and engineering, banking and financial workouts, unfair competition, intellectual property, employment, antitrust and professional malpractice. As a lawyer and on the bench, he applied extensive experience and case management skills to the disputes before him.

“My time as a trial attorney and on the bench taught me the value of being prepared and looking for new ways to approach conflicts in a way that can benefit all parties. This opportunity with JAMS is a tremendous next step in my career as an ADR professional, and I look forward to helping my clients resolve their disputes,” said Judge Swenson.

Judge Swenson earned his B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Minnesota and his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School.
